What to expect for my first physical therapy visit?
During your first visit, you can expect the following:
Why do I need a doctor’s referral?
In New Mexico, patients have direct access to physical therapy. Therefore, a doctor's referral is not necessary to make an appointment for physical therapy treatments if you are not going through your medical insurance. However, if you would like to use your medical insurance we then need a doctor's referral for physical therapy. When you call to schedule an appointment we will be able to check your insurance allowance for you.
How should I dress?
Please wear loose fitting comfortable clothing that allows access to the area needing to be treated. There are treatment rooms and restrooms with ample space for you to change into gym type clothing.
How long will each physical therapy treatment last?
Initial therapy evaluations take approximately 55 minutes. Future session duration will be determined by the physical therapist based upon your specific needs.
How many visits will I need?
This is dependent upon multiple factors including: your diagnosis, the severity of your issue, how long ago you sustained the injury prior to seeking help, your past medical history, etc. Therefore, you may need only one visit or you may require months of care. Your status will be re-evaluated on a regular basis and when you see your doctor, we will provide you with a progress note with our recommendations.
Who will see me at the physical therapy clinic?
You will be evaluated by one of our licensed and highly trained physical therapists and he/she will also treat you during subsequent visits. Unlike some clinics, where you see someone different each visit, we strive to keep patients with the same physical therapist as much as possible. Occasionally, in order to accommodate your schedule, you may have to see another physical therapist. We will privately communicate about your treatment plan to assure continuity in your care.
Is physical therapy painful?
For many patients, one of the primary objectives of physical therapy is pain relief! This is accomplished with a combination of: specific exercises and proper movement, hands-on techniques, dry needling, electrical modalities (such as US/TENS machines) and heat or cold therapy. Your physical therapist will provide you with the appropriate exercises that will assist in reducing pain while recovering range of motion, strength, body awareness, balance and endurance. In some cases, physical therapy techniques can be painful (as it often is when you are trying to regain motion in a certain joint). It is very important that you communicate the intensity, frequency, and duration of pain to your physical therapist.
What will I have to do after physical therapy?
It is important that you communicate your goals to your physical therapist, so your physical therapist can develop a custom program for you to be able to continue after your physical therapy ends.
Who pays for the physical therapy treatment?
In most cases, insurance will cover some if not all of the cost of your treatment. We also have excellent rates for private pay. Please bring cash or check as we do not accept credit cards.
What is your cancellation policy?
Wellness Works Physical Therapy requires 24 hour notice to cancel an appointment with no cancellation fee charge. If you need to cancel a Monday appointment you must call by Friday by the time of your scheduled appointment for Monday. If for any reason you miss your appointment and do not call and notify us you will be charged $50. Insurance will not pay for this. One exception to the 24 hour rule is severe weather. If you do not feel you can make your appointment because of severe weather, please call and notify us immediately!
What happens if my problem or pain returns?
Flare ups are not uncommon. If you have a flare up (exacerbation), please give us a call. We may suggest you come back to see us, return to your doctor, or simply modify your daily activities or exercise routine.
During your first visit, you can expect the following:
- Arrive at your appointment 20 minutes early as you will need to check in.
- You will need to provide us with your physical therapy referral from your MD if using your insurance.
- You will also need to bring with you your driver's license, insurance card, and list of medications.
- Your physical therapist will meet with you in a private room where you will be seen for the initial evaluation.
- During this initial exam, the physical therapist will discuss the following:
- Your medical history.
- Your current problems.
- Pain intensity, what aggravates and eases the problem.
- How this is impacting your daily activities or your functional limitations.
- The goals you expect to attain through therapy.
- Medications, tests, and procedures related to your health.
